Those who engage in these works are also confronted with something questionable, something open. As much as Laner’s shadowy figures, reminiscent of the demonic chimeras of the Middle Ages, suggest that they are animalistic, transhumanes, it is certain that ist is a self-encounter. The strange is the human itself. She paints the animal and feels her way towards the human being. In a wall piece made of human hair entitled “Mother Animal”, human and animal are amalgamated into one another. The use of hair insistently asks about the body that belongs to it, but is not present.

It is no coincidence, then, that in Laner’s own style can be glimpsed that being children of a borderland, which at times comes close to that mediterranean declination of contemporary expressionism that has found its most famous representatives in Paladino and Barcelò, but which at the same time seems to find deeper nourritures in certain informal prints, or in the secluded but capital experience of Rolf Iseli.
A path that finally, beyond the literary suggestions – which are also undeniable, but always transformed into the language of images – returns by other means to its starting point, to that originality of expression that, for Laner, is a search for the origin of his own being an artist, as a daily interrogation to which only another sign can respond: once again, and forever, first and last sign.
